Wow! I was lucky enough to be a tag-along with the host of my radio show to a tasting event for a new catering company. He has some connection to the chef of Saffron Hill catering. This would be the ultimate job; show up, taste all of the food, write your comments down, and then have a glass of wine! Yea! I could do that! I cook. I can use a knife and I never have anyone say no to one of my dinner invitations. So surely this would be right down my alley.
The food was quite impressive, Indian influenced, but not predictable. One of my favorite items was a Cucumber Lassi....with a kick. A Lassi is a yogurt smoothie of sorts, served cold and originally designed to be refreshing on hot days. But this one had an added kick from a spice that grabbed you in the throat... in a good way. It was cool and refreshing, but at the same time it had enough heat to keep your taste buds jumping, but then the cucumber cooled down the heat, but then some more heat awoke your buds all over again.
After a couple of more tastes, a small glass of Pinot, and a couple more bites, I realized this wasn't going to be so easy. We all think we know so much about food, but when we suddenly have to provide intelligent, clear and concise feedback... well, suddenly all we can say is "hmmm, boy I really liked that." All that cooking, all those food magazines, and all I can come up with is "hmmm, boy I really liked that?" It's not so easy being a food critic. I guess I'll just have to try again..... And again..................And maybe again.
