Black Poodle in a Glass


For this second batch, (or as we call around out little back woods mash pit, Batch #2) we made Black Poodle Porter. Can you guess why? This is Zootie, one of the pair that haunts; nay owns, controls even, the famed Linwood Brewery.








So here's the recipe this time. And a malt extract picture for your viewing enjoyment.





Batch #2 (Black Poodle Porter)

Style: Robust Porter

Racked: 4/18/06

Steep Time: 45 (min)
Temp: 155º F

Ingredients
Mash-Specialty Grains:
1 ¾ lbs. 2-Row

½ lbs. 70º-80º Crystal

½ lbs. Chocolate
¼ lbs. Carafa

¼ lbs. Barley flakes


8 lbs. Malt extract


Boiling Hops (Bittering):
Min. oz. AAU
60 1 Northern Brewer

30 1 Willamette


Finishing Hops (Aroma):

1/2oz. Willamette (last 15 min.)

1/2oz. Willamette (end of boil)


Yeast: Windsor

Priming: ¾ cup dextrose in 1 cup H2O

Special Instructions
: 6 days in Primary fermenter; 15 to 18 days in secondary fermenter; 30 to 45 days in bottle.

This porter was a dense, chocolate, aromatic brew I immediately wanted to brew again. But I must confess, the real brewmasters here are the friendly beer elves at San Francisco Brewcraft. As these are my first attempts at brewing, all of the recipes and advice are from them. Well, here's to 'em.
